Different Types of Braces

Posted October 28, 2015

While bracers are typically seen as part of childhood, there are many adults today that are getting braces to help better align their teeth or adapt to changes that have occurred in their smile over the years.

There are several different types of braces to choose from.

Traditional braces uses wires and metal brackets anchored to teeth. With periodic adjustments the teeth are pulled into the desired alignment. Recent developments have helped make these braces less obtrusive and more cost effective.

Ceramic braces are similar to traditional braces, except the braces themselves are coated in a ceramic material that can mimic the color of the teeth. This makes them less noticeable to the casual observer.

Lingual braces are anchored on the inside of the teeth towards the tongue. While these braces are not as apparent to others, they are harder to clean and often take longer to adjust.

Clear braces, sometimes known as Invisalign braces are a series of plastic aligners will be custom built to match your mouth. These aligners are made from a clear durable plastic. The casual observer can rarely even notice you have them in!

Every two weeks you will switch to a new set of aligners as your teeth gradually conform to your ideal placement. Ideally you will need to wear the aligners for 20 to 22 hours each day.
