While you are wearing braces to align your smile, there are several issues that can arise. If you have an orthodontic emergency, call our office to discuss the problem with our orthodontists or team. You may need to visit right away or you may be able to do something to alleviate the problem until your next scheduled visit.

Loose Bracket
Brackets are the ceramic or metal squares that are attached to the front of each tooth. They can become weak or break if you chew something hard or sticky. This can cause the bracket to come loose and poke into your cheek, gums, or tongue. Put orthodontic wax over the bracket to keep it from poking the inside of your mouth. This will make things relieve discomfort until you visit Drs. Burris, Fiegle, and Katie.

Broken or Protruding Wire
If a wire sticks out or becomes damaged, it can injure your gums, tongue, or cheek. You may use the eraser on the end of a pencil to push the wire back into position. If the wire will not move to a comfortable position, put a piece of orthodontic wax over the end of the wire. If a protruding wire has caused a sore, rinse your mouth with an antiseptic rinse or with warm salt water. This will clean the area and reduce discomfort.

We invite you to contact [practice_name] at [phone] today to learn more and to schedule an appointment. When you come into our office, our friendly orthodontists in [city], [state], may adjust, reposition, or reattach the existing brackets or wires. If necessary, brackets or wires will be replaced.

The post What to Do in Case of an Orthodontic Emergency first appeared on Winning Orthodontic Smiles.

If you want a successful orthodontic treatment, then you need to care for your smile and braces as well as keep tooth decay and other dental issues at bay. Now, because the teeth and gums are tough to clean at times, those with braces are more prone to cavities. This means that if you have braces, you have to be careful. Our orthodontists, Drs. Burris, Fiegle, and Katie, are happy to help you prevent cavities during orthodontic treatment by encouraging you to do the following things:

-Focus on brushing: Make sure to brush regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brushing after each meal and snack can remove the food particles and bacteria that can attack your teeth and create cavities. Be sure to brush for two minutes each time and to scrub under the wires and around the brackets.

-Focus on flossing: Flossing is vital when preventing cavities. This is because it removes the bacteria from between the teeth and helps you prevent cavities in those crevices. So, make sure to floss at least once a day. If you can floss more often, like after you brush, do it.

-Visit your dentist: Your routine dental checkups help you prevent cavities because the cleaning treatment removes plaque and bacteria from your smile and the fluoride treatment nourishes and strengthens your tooth enamel. Make sure to keep up on your checkups by visiting your dentist every six months.

For more information and details about how to prevent cavities when you have braces in [city], [state], please contact [practice_name] at [phone] when you can. Burris, Fiegle and Plunkett, are happy to help you find the answers and information you need so you can know more about orthodontics. The more you know, the better. So, to help you, they are happy to provide the answers to commonly asked questions about orthodontics.

Q: How does orthodontic treatment align the teeth?
A: Your orthodontist will align the smile by adjusting the orthodontic appliance you use. When adjusting the appliance, pressure will be applied to the teeth. That pressure will move the teeth into the right places.

Q: What appliances are available?
A: Typically, braces and aligners are used to align the teeth. There are many different types of braces available, including metal and ceramic braces.

Q: How long does treatment take?
A: Treatment depends on the severity of the misalignments in your teeth and jaw. However, treatment typically averages to be about 18-30 months.

Q: Does treatment hurt?
A: You’re adjustment appointments do provide a little bit of discomfort one to two days after the appointment, but this is to be expected and can be managed. This means your teeth are moving!

If you want to have a successful orthodontic journey, then there are things you need to do to keep your teeth, gums and appliance in tip-top shape. The more you care for your smile and braces, the better chance you have of achieving your perfect smile. So, our orthodontista would like to help you have a successful orthodontic journey by encouraging you to do the following things:

-Keep up on oral hygiene: This means you need to brush after every meal, floss at least once a day and rinse your mouth with mouthwash often. These things can help you maintain a clean and pristine smile; maintain top-notch teeth, gums and braces; as well as avoid embarrassing food-filled smile moments. Make sure to pack your toothbrush and toothpaste with you so you can brush throughout the day, and try to use convenient oral hygiene tools to make brushing and flossing easier, like interdental brushes and floss threaders.

-Attend your routine dental checkups: Your dental checkups are vital for a successful orthodontic treatment, especially because they help you prevent major dental issues, like cavities and gum disease. So, make sure to attend your checkups every six months.

-Follow your orthodontist’s instructions: This means you need to have the appropriate diet and braces care techniques. You should avoid foods that damage your braces and you should wear any rubber brands or other appliance accessories when recommended.

There are many things that could cause a broken bracket, including eating chewy or sticky foods, getting hit in the mouth, brushing your teeth incorrectly, or improperly using a toothpick or floss. Broken brackets are common, but it is very important that you manage the situation as much as possible, and you can do so by:

Checking the bracket and wire: If the bracket is still connected to the wire, leave it there. It’s best that you place orthodontic wax around it so it doesn’t slide around and move. If your bracket is no longer connected to the wire, it’s best to take the bracket out of your mouth and bring it into the office with you during your next appointment.

Dealing with any poking wires: If there are wires that are poking you, it’s best to clip them as short as possible with fingernail clippers. You can also try putting the wire back into place with a pencil eraser or a Q-Tip.

Scheduling an appointment: It’s very important that you schedule an appointment as soon as possible. If you delay fixing the bracket, additional problems could occur and your treatment time could be lengthened.

Call our office today if you have any questions or if you would like to schedule an appointment to fix your broken bracket. We are happy to help you get back on the right track toward achieving your perfect smile!
