Braces are a strong and reliable appliance that can help you achieve the smile of your dreams. However, that’s only the case if you do everything you can to keep them in tip-top shape. If you have questions about oral hygiene with braces, caring for your appliance can be quite tough. So, our orthodontists encourage you to find the answers to your questions about oral hygiene with braces. To help you do so, [heshe] is happy to provide the answers to the following commonly asked questions:

Question No. 1: How often should I brush and floss my teeth?
Answer: It’s very important to brush after each time you eat. This can help you maintain clean and pristine teeth, gums and braces. You should also floss after each time you eat, but if you can’t, you should floss at least once a day.

Question No. 2: Why is oral hygiene important?
Answer: Oral hygiene helps you care for your braces, and when you care for your braces, your braces can care for you! You need a strong and functional appliance to achieve the smile you have always wanted. Oral hygiene also helps you prevent dental issues, like tooth decay and gum disease, which is very important during orthodontic treatment.

Question No. 3: Are there special tools to make oral hygiene easier?
Answer: Yes, there are many tools that can make cleaning your teeth, gums and appliance a bit more convenient. Some of those tools include water flossers, floss threaders and interdental brushes. Feel free to use them!

If you want a successful orthodontic treatment, then you need to care for your smile and braces as well as keep tooth decay and other dental issues at bay. Now, because the teeth and gums are tough to clean at times, those with braces are more prone to cavities. This means that if you have braces, you have to be careful. Our orthodontists, Drs. Burris, Fiegle, and Katie, are happy to help you prevent cavities during orthodontic treatment by encouraging you to do the following things:

-Focus on brushing: Make sure to brush regularly with a soft-bristled toothbrush. Brushing after each meal and snack can remove the food particles and bacteria that can attack your teeth and create cavities. Be sure to brush for two minutes each time and to scrub under the wires and around the brackets.

-Focus on flossing: Flossing is vital when preventing cavities. This is because it removes the bacteria from between the teeth and helps you prevent cavities in those crevices. So, make sure to floss at least once a day. If you can floss more often, like after you brush, do it.

-Visit your dentist: Your routine dental checkups help you prevent cavities because the cleaning treatment removes plaque and bacteria from your smile and the fluoride treatment nourishes and strengthens your tooth enamel. Make sure to keep up on your checkups by visiting your dentist every six months.

For more information and details about how to prevent cavities when you have braces in [city], [state], please contact [practice_name] at [phone] when you can.

The orthodontic braces installed in your mouth at Drs. Skeet Burris, Travis Fiegle & Katie Pluckett’s orthodontic clinic have been designed to correct the alignment of your teeth through the course of successive adjustments. Each time your braces are tightened it applies minute force to the periodontal ligaments that anchor your teeth in your gums.

Cavities and gum health problems can sometimes complicate the process and lead to unnecessary discomfort after your adjustments.

Fortunately, a consistent daily oral hygiene routine based on brushing your teeth twice and flossing at least once each day can help remove bacterial deposits from your mouth become they can promote oral health problems.

If you are having trouble brushing around braces hardware or cleaning a contoured area, you might want to try using a small interdental brush.

Sometimes braces hardware can make it difficult to floss certain areas including the gumline. To help work the strand of dental floss around wires and components you might want to try using a floss threader. It can help you remove plaque and residual food particles from all the surfaces between your teeth as well as your gumline.

Your routine dental checkup is also important for monitoring the health of your teeth and gums to catch any problems that might develop or to determine the most applicable preventative measures.

If you had braces installed in your mouth at Drs. [doctor_name]’s orthodontic office in [city] or Bluffton, [state], and you have an oral hygiene question, you can always call [phone] to speak to a staff member at [practice_name].

The post Take Care of Your Smile While Wearing Braces first appeared on Winning Orthodontic Smiles.

Maintaining clean braces and a healthy mouth is an important part of the process of realigning your teeth. Cavities and periodontal health problems can cause discomfort, and could potentially increase the amount of time it takes to effectively correct the position and orientation of your teeth.

At the same time, orthodontic components like brackets, wires, bands, and spacers can sometimes prove challenging to clean with your standard soft-bristled toothbrush. Some elements, like wires, might also make it challenging to effectively floss the gumline.

To help aid in your daily oral hygiene efforts, you might want to try including one or two special oral hygiene tools in your regimen.

An interdental brush is basically a miniature toothbrush with a tapered brush head. This can be especially helpful for cleaning hard to reach places around braces components. It might also handy for removing small food particles from bands and spacers.

A special water flosser device such as a Waterpik® might also help to loosen and wash away food deposits. Just keep in mind that this is it is not meant to fully replace the ability of dental floss to clean between teeth and the gumline.

If you’re having trouble flossing around wires and other orthodontic components, to clear the gumline, you might want to try using a floss threader. When this simple tool is loaded with waxed dental floss it can help insert the strand of dental floss in place while reducing your chances of accidentally snapping it into your gums.

As you scrub your smile each day, it’s important you have the proper tools that will give you the best cleaning possible. One tool that is very important is toothpaste, and we are happy to tell you the best toothpaste possible for your smile. We strongly recommend using one or more of the following toothpastes:

Fluoride Toothpaste
Fluoride toothpaste is a great option. It is a product that not only cleans your teeth, but it also nourishes and strengthens your teeth as well. Fluoride is the most important ingredient to look for in fluoride because your smile loses minerals every day. This toothpaste will replace those minerals with fluoride and will protect your teeth from the acid that is released from the sugars and starches we eat.

Tartar Control Toothpaste
Tartar is a very dangerous substance that can destroy your teeth, which is why tartar control toothpaste is also a great option for your smile. This toothpaste will help remove the plaque and tartar that resides on your smile, which will help you prevent gum disease. However, this toothpaste does not replace the tartar-removing techniques offered at the dental office.

Toothpaste for Sensitive Teeth
Tooth sensitivity is inconvenient and annoying, and if you are one who is sensitive to hot or cold temperatures, sensitivity toothpaste is for you. The paste contains chemical compounds that block the pathways that lead to the teeth’s nerves, which reduces the amount of discomfort you feel when you eat or drink something hot or cold.

Whitening Toothpaste
Whitening toothpaste is a great product for those who wish to brighten their smile. Many of these pastes provide successful results, but please remember to choose a paste that whitens as well as cleans your smile. This is very important. The whitening solution in the toothpaste will polish your teeth and will lift the stains from your smile.

No matter which toothpaste you choose to use, make sure it has the American Dental Association Seal of Acceptance. This seal of approval proves that the product has passed testing for safety and effectiveness. With these products, you will know you have the safest and most effective product possible. If you have any questions or if you would like to learn more, call our office today and talk to a member of our friendly dental team!

The post What to Look for in a Tube of Toothpaste first appeared on Winning Orthodontic Smiles.
